What is gamban®?
gamban® is software that prevents Windows, MacOSX, Android and iOS devices from accessing online gambling.
How does gamban® work?
gamban® acts as a filter protecting your computer from gambling sites. The database (well, several databases, as they are each quite large!) consists of online casinos, poker sites, bingo sites, sports betting platforms and casual trading sites. URLs are both automatically and manually added before human-moderation to ensure ONLY real-money gambling sites are blocked – and nothing else. This leaves your computer protected against gambling sites, with minimal intrusion.
What's the rationale behind gamban®?
gamban® helps people by blocking access to sites they find difficult to avoid with willpower alone. gamban® is the ‘first line of defence’ against the intrusiveness of online gambling.
Who's behind gamban®?
The founding team have many years of experience with the development of software solutions and, more specifically, problem gambling. gamban® is owned by Beanstalk HPS Ltd, located in Southampton, UK.
How's gamban® different other software?
gamban® is the most effective and least intrusive gambling blocking software available. Without blocking keywords, gamban® uses both a manual approach and automation. The software is available on most major desktop and mobile operating systems – Windows, MacOSX, iOS and Android.
Does gamban® work with the gambling industry?
No. gamban® is entirely independent. However, we recognise the value of operators purchasing licences for self-excluded customers.
How do I update gamban®?
Updates are made automatically in the background. This means you will always have the latest version installed without having to manually update gamban®.
How do I add devices?
You can add extra devices in account management (gamban.com/profile). Click the Add More Devices and choose the number of devices you wish to add.
How do I renew my licence?
Should you wish to manually renew your licence, simply go to your profile (gamban.com/profile) and click renew.
Is my payment secure?
Yes, your payment is 100% secure. gamban® payments are processed by Braintree and we accept credit card, debit card and PayPal payments.
Why is gamban® so affordable?
Primarily because the nature of this software is that it is needed right at a point where large subscription fees are not an option for most. Yes, we need to charge a small amount to cover the operational costs but we need to respect that this is a purchase made by individuals often when funds are low. To this extent, the promo code ‘GAMBAN2018’ offers a one month trial before you need to pay. Sites that offer blocking software at 10x the price of gamban® are taxing desperation and we choose a lower price-point. Better protection for less is our mantra.
How do I turn off auto-renewal?
You can toggle auto-renew to on/off in account management (gamban.com/profile). For seamless protection, we recommend ensuring auto-renew is set to ON.
Can I install gamban® on my mobile phone or tablet?
Yes, gamban® is available on Android devices using Android version 6+ (Marshmallow) and iOS devices using 10+.
My friend/family/acquaintance is gambling too much. Can I install gamban® on their computer?
Yes, you can download gamban® for someone else though you should discuss this with them first. We’ve experienced a number of cases where concerned family members want to take steps to protect their loves ones from gambling.
Why can I still install / download gambling apps on android with gamban® installed?
We cannot stop you from downloading gambling apps from the Play Store but the connection is blocked so you will not be able to gamble from these apps.
Can I uninstall gamban®?
Users cannot uninstall gamban® as the software has been designed to prevent unauthorised uninstallation.
I am selling my computer, will you remove gamban®?
As a rule we do not uninstall on this basis. If you are selling your computer you should factory reset the device.
What is the duration of protection?
gamban® continues indefinitely and can be purchased annually (12 months).
Does gamban® block all gambling sites?
Yes, we aim to block all gambling sites.
Do VPNs and proxies circumvent gamban®?
VPNs and proxies could potentially enable you to access gambling sites but we advise against this for several reasons.
- Operators may not process a payout/withdrawal if you are remotely playing in an alternative region or if they know a VPN or proxy is being used.
- Payment details are not necessarily safe due to unknown networks (often multiple unknown networks).
We block in-browser VPNs as a basic level of support and are constantly exploring ways to prevent access to gambling – so long as our software remains both lightweight and simple.
What is our criteria for a gambling site?
Any site/application that allows visitors to wager purposefully for a return. This includes poker, bingo, casino and sports betting, mainly, but also casual trading sites that are more aligned to ‘gambling’ than ‘investment’.
Will gamban® stop me from gambling?
gamban® will prevent you gambling on the device you install gamban® on. It cannot remove your temptation to gamble but can be a useful tool to prevent you gambling at home. gamban® is a strong ‘first line of defence’ against problem gambling but you may require additional support.
I have gambling applications installed on my computer. Do I need to uninstall these?
You need to uninstall the applications already on your computer and ensure funds are withdrawn from your online gambling accounts, as you will not be able to access these sites when gamban® is installed.
gamban® blocks gambling with skins but what is 'skins gambling' and how does it work?
gamban® use multiple approaches to block the gambling element within popular games. Most of these games are accessed via the Steam platform. Within the games there may be a use for purchasing or obtaining skins to progress the game, improve characters or other mostly harmless reasons. However many individuals are finding that because of a real-money value to these in-game items, combined with an increasing number of skins gambling sites (lotteries, roulette, blackjack, coin-flips, raffles, tournaments) and an active trading market, skins gambling has come to be popular and in many ways similar to gambling with pounds, dollars, euros or crypto-currency. It’s therefore important that we block this gambling element that sits within games to broaden our protection for those who need it. More information can be found on our family page
