Organization Name
Minnesota Alliance on Problem Gambling
What do you do?
The Minnesota Alliance on Problem Gambling (MNAPG) works to improve the lives of Minnesotans affected by problem gambling. As a nonprofit coalition, we focus on raising awareness about the risks of gambling, reducing stigma and connecting people with resources for prevention, treatment and recovery. We also provide professional training, public education programs and community outreach to help individuals, families and communities better understand and respond to gambling-related harm.
What are some of the services we provide?
MNAPG provides services to help educate professionals and the general public about gambling addiction and to help others who are experiencing problem gambling. Some of these services include:
Annual Minnesota Conference on Problem Gambling. Each year, we host an annual conference that provides education for treatment professionals and information for a range of audiences.
Community presentations. Our community presentations include basic information about problem gambling, gaming disorder and the interplay between gambling addiction and other addictions.
Some of the audiences we reach include:
- Mental health and addiction providers
- Counselors and therapists
- Healthcare staff
- Non-clinical professionals, such as attorneys, bankers and financial advisors
- Human Resources staff
- Clergy and religious leaders
- Communities of faith, chambers of commerce, rotary clubs
- Corrections personnel
We also have a responsible gambling high school toolkit to help get important messages out to young people.
Financial counseling. In partnership with LSS Financial Counseling and GamFin, we offer free specialized financial services for those in recovery from gambling addiction as well as family members affected by the gambler’s behavior.
Self-exclusion tools. We offer free individual subscriptions to Gamban, a self-exclusion tool that allows gamblers to block themselves from accessing thousands of online gambling sites.
Community leader training. Our free problem gambling awareness course helps community leaders in Minnesota educate and advocate for those in their community experiencing problem gambling.
Comparative gambling behavior survey. Minnesotans can compare their gambling with other Minnesotans and determine if their gambling is in the healthy or unhealthy range.
Commission research. We work with experts to produce research on a range of topics to better understand gambling addiction in our community.
Quarterly newsletter. We produce an award-winning quarterly newsletter that addresses a range of gambling topics and developments in Minnesota.
Who can access these services?
MNAPG services are available to anyone affected by problem gambling in Minnesota. This includes individuals experiencing gambling problems, family members and loved ones affected by someone else’s gambling, as well as professionals and community members who want to learn more about prevention and support.
How can people access these services?
People can access MNAPG services by visiting MNAPG.org for information on the various services we provide.
Are these services free?
Many MNAPG services are provided free of charge, including educational resources, awareness trainings and certain financial counseling programs. There is a modest charge for our annual conference.
How have we made a difference?
MNAPG makes a difference by bringing people together to address the often-hidden impact of problem gambling. By educating communities, training professionals, advocating for effective policies and connecting individuals and families to support services, the organization helps ensure that Minnesotans know the risks of gambling and that help is available when gambling becomes harmful.
