They appear on TV, online, across social media and on sports games. For many people, especially those trying to stop gambling, this constant exposure makes it much harder to stay in control.<h3>Annie Ashton and the reality behind “free bets”</h3>Christopher meets gambling reform campaigner Annie Ashton, whose husband Luke took his own life in 2021 as a result of a gambling disorder after being repeatedly targeted by gambling advertising.Luke first started gambling in 2018 after being drawn in by free-bet offers. He managed to stop in 2019. During furlough, however, gambling companies began targeting him again with offers and promotions.Within four months, Luke had taken out loans and hidden his struggles from his family. Gambling companies continued to send him inducements, including one the day before he went missing. Luke died by suicide in April 2021, aged 40.Since Luke’s death, Annie has campaigned to stop free bets, bonuses and gambling advertising. She launched Luke’s Law, a petition calling for a ban on free bets, which gained more than 31,000 signatures in six months, forcing a response from the government.<h3>How gambling ads are designed to keep people gambling</h3>Christopher also visits ethical ad agency Don't Panic, where he speaks to Joel about how gambling advertising works.Joel explains that gambling ads often use humour, celebrities and high-quality production to make gambling look fun and harmless. Event Contracts and Prediction Markets

There has always been a blurred line between crypto and betting, with financial and gambling addiction experts arguing that crypto is a lot closer to gambling than it is to investing. That grey area has now expanded - thanks to a new loophole that has led to some investing apps introducing sports betting under a different guise.<h3>“Event contracts” or “Prediction markets.”</h3>On the Robinhood website, event contracts are described as follows: “An event contract is a type of financial derivative that allows traders to speculate on the outcome of a specific event. These contracts are generally structured around Yes or No outcomes, and fluctuate in price based on the projected outcome of the event. Event contracts then pay out if the position held matches the correct outcome of the event; otherwise, they expire worthless.”In simpler terms, you’re paying to guess the outcome of an event - and if you’re right, you make money.Now, we can look at the Oxford dictionary definition of betting:“The activity of playing games of chance for money.”The two look uncannily similar, right?That’s because they are.Typically, we’d argue that day trading, particularly crypto or with leverage, is just another form of gambling. However, the lines are getting even blurrier with the inclusion of event outcomes.<h3>How is this allowed?</h3>In markets where it’s legal, companies offering sports betting need gambling licences, users have to go through age checks, and self-exclusion tools must be available. But some investment platforms have found a way around that - by calling their bets “event contracts” or “prediction markets”.Even industry insiders agree. Former journalist and gambling consultant Dustin Gouker told ESPN, “There’s no doubt that it’s gambling.”<h3>No Safety Nets</h3>Here’s the worrying part.Because these products are labelled as “trades” instead of bets, they don’t have to follow the same rules as gambling companies. That means they lack even the most basic protections for consumers. This means:<ul><li>You can “bet” inside an investing app, even in places where gambling isn’t legal.</li><li>Self-exclusion, deposit limits, and age checks may not apply.</li><li>Gambling-style products can appear right next to your regular investments.</li><li>For those recovering from gambling, this mix of investing and betting can be dangerous.</li></ul><h3>What's being done?</h3>Several US gambling regulators have already stepped in, ordering Kalshi to stop offering sports-based markets. Their argument is simple: these so-called “event contracts” are indistinguishable from regular sports bets.Despite multiple cease-and-desist orders, Kalshi is continuing to operate nationwide by claiming that its sports markets are federally regulated financial products, not gambling.But here’s where it becomes even more concerning.While traditional sportsbooks are required to verify users are 21 or older, Kalshi only asks that users be 18. What started as an idea has grown into a team of 17, an app that works around the world, and thousands of people who have been helped by our services.<h2>The Evolution of Gamban</h2>The year is 2015. Hello by Adele is breaking global charts, NASA has announced the discovery of liquid water on Mars, and the world can’t agree on the colour of that dress. While everyone else is caught up in the noise, Jack Symons notices something no one else seems to have: there’s no effective way to block gambling on a Mac.Existing tools were clunky, easy to bypass or built for parental controls. So he built a basic proof of concept by modifying the host files and compiling a list of around 15,000 gambling domains.To turn it into a real product, Jack reached out to Mavia and, together, they started working to build a Mac app, with plans to expand to Windows and Android. Rather than focusing on fast growth or flashy marketing, Mavia and his team prioritised usability and long-term support. Their approach wasn’t just about building an app; it was about creating a reliable tool that could truly make a difference in people’s lives.But a good product alone wasn’t enough. Jack knew he needed the right people to help turn the idea into something bigger. Noticing Matt’s work in gambling reform, he decided to reach out.Matt and Jack first connected when Jack sent a cold message on LinkedIn. Intrigued, Matt agreed to meet him.
