Things like page views at various parts of a user journey help us to understand more about our users’ needs, so we can make changes accordingly. </p><h3>Why did we make that change?</h3><p>Your privacy matters, and we believe Google Analytics has become too intrusive, doubling down on tracking and following users across all of their browsing activity.</p><p>Plausible doesn't use cookies, build profiles, store personal data or follow you around the internet.  </p><p>It also means Gamban is one less website where you have to accept or reject the cookie notice.</p><p>Plausible is also lighter and faster, so pages load more efficiently, resulting in a better user experience. </p><p>We limit the information shared with third parties to an absolute minimum. In past years, we moved our email marketing and sales metrics to a completely in-house solution.</p><p>We also recently moved our support ticketing system in-house, and access to that data is only possible through our internal network with strict controls. This leaves only our payment processors and communication providers as the third parties with whom we share data. </p><p>Our team has also reduced reliance on third-party machine translation services, instead translating customer support queries (when an agent doesn't speak the language) locally using privacy-preserving translation software.</p><p>This change means stronger privacy, faster performance and a better experience for everyone.</p><h3>What information do you need to sign up for Gamban?</h3><p>We will need an email address to get you started. Be up front about challenges and it’ll help you plan more positively for the future. </p><p>If you are in debt, looking at ways to re-build finances can feel overwhelming on your own. How An Accountability Partner Can Help You In Recovery

<p>Jack founded Gamban in 2015 when struggling with online gambling. He noticed there wasn’t any dependable blocking software available for Mac and wanted to create something which reliably blocks websites and apps, making a positive difference to people’s lives.</p><h3>Jack’s Story</h3><p>At university,  not a day went by that I didn’t gamble online, and on many occasions, I was playing up to 14 hours a day. Online gambling is generally much easier to hide than other forms of offline gambling, so I was able to keep it hidden.</p><p>One night, I hit a jackpot, but to withdraw the money and satisfy the bonus requirements, I had to continue wagering a significant amount of money. Eventually, I was able to withdraw the funds and had more money in my bank account than I had ever had before.</p><p>Once you get a taste for the swings, the high highs, and the low lows, it’s hard to go back. What I was doing was very quickly becoming unaffordable, and before long, I’d lost all the money I had saved.</p><p>I tried to stop so many times, but without success. I realised that what I needed was to put a barrier between myself and gambling because willpower wasn’t enough. I installed parental control software, but quickly found it easy to disable.</p><p>One evening, my father and I were talking about gambling, and I came up with the idea of a light-touch, cross-platform software that blocked access to nothing but gambling. As I was still gambling, I needed this, so I got to work immediately, and Gamban was born.</p><h3>You don't have to hit rock bottom to rebuild</h3><p>In 2017, 888 got a record penalty due to significant failures in their social responsibility and anti-money laundering procedures.​ This caused a media frenzy, and I ended up doing a mini circuit of interviews.</p><p>Newsnight was quick to ask "how much did you lose?" and "did you try to kill yourself?".</p><p>I couldn't pretend I did, so they went with someone else.</p><p>That said, my story has been shared a lot online, and I suppose it's more interesting because I took action when I realised I couldn't stop myself from coming back to online slots and casinos.</p><p>I have no idea how much I lost over the years, nor do I care to find out. The figure is irrelevant.</p><p>What I lost was my value of money and time, and the impact on my mental health.</p><p>I want to offer three platitudes that helped me along the way.</p><ul><li><strong>Recover loudly so others don't suffer silently</strong> - Pithy, but some truth to this. I get a lot of satisfaction knowing people who have heard me on podcasts have sought help.</li><li><strong>You don't have to hit rock bottom to rebuild </strong>- How far into the abyss do you need to go? Is it enough to 'peer into' or do you have to go all the way?</li><li>​<strong>You lost. That's ok. You won't get it back. Leave it in the past. <p>Actor and mental health advocate Christopher Eccleston and the Coalition To End Gambling Ads are calling on the Government to end all gambling promotions.</p><p><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DSuWmKOiarv/"><u>Watch the full video here.</u></a></p><h3>“I’ve obviously got an issue with it”</h3><p>In the video, Christopher talks openly about his concerns around gambling advertising, especially because many of the TV shows and films he appears in are watched by children.</p><p><i>“My feelings were so strong I’ve obviously got an issue with it, and I’d like to dig into it.”</i></p><p>Gambling adverts are now everywhere. They appear on TV, online, across social media and on sports games. For many people, especially those trying to stop gambling, this constant exposure makes it much harder to stay in control.</p><h3>Annie Ashton and the reality behind “free bets”</h3><p>Christopher meets gambling reform campaigner Annie Ashton, whose husband Luke took his own life in 2021 as a result of a gambling disorder after being repeatedly targeted by gambling advertising.</p><p>Luke first started gambling in 2018 after being drawn in by free-bet offers. He managed to stop in 2019. During furlough, however, gambling companies began targeting him again with offers and promotions.</p><p>Within four months, Luke had taken out loans and hidden his struggles from his family. Gambling companies continued to send him inducements, including one the day before he went missing. Luke died by suicide in April 2021, aged 40.</p><p>Since Luke’s death, Annie has campaigned to stop free bets, bonuses and gambling advertising. She launched Luke’s Law, a petition calling for a ban on free bets, which gained more than 31,000 signatures in six months, forcing a response from the government.</p><h3>How gambling ads are designed to keep people gambling</h3><p>Christopher also visits ethical ad agency Don't Panic, where he speaks to Joel about how gambling advertising works.</p><p>Joel explains that gambling ads often use humour, celebrities and high-quality production to make gambling look fun and harmless. Once someone responds to an advert or offer, they can be pulled into a system designed to keep them gambling for as long as possible.</p><p>People are tracked by algorithms and shown targeted offers across apps, websites and social media, often through constant notifications on their phones.</p><p>Joel compares this to alcohol advertising, where strict rules apply. Alcohol adverts cannot suggest that drinking will make someone more popular, successful or happier. Gambling adverts, however, are still allowed to propagate these notions.</p><h3>Using advertising to tell the truth</h3><p>In the final part of the video, Christopher and Joel discuss creating an advert that copies the look and feel of gambling promotions, but tells the truth about gambling harm, including debt, distress and suicide.</p><p>It shows how powerful advertising can be, and how dangerous it is when it is left unchecked.</p><h3>Why this matters</h3><p>More than one million adults in the UK are affected by gambling problems, and every year hundreds of people die by suicide linked to gambling harm (Gambling Commission, 2023; Office for Health Improvement and Disparities, 2022).</p><p>Research shows that gambling advertising and free-bet offers increase gambling and make harm worse, particularly for people who are already struggling (Wardle et al., 2022; WHO, 2023).</p><h3>What people are saying</h3><p>Since the video was shared, many people have spoken about how gambling adverts have affected them.</p><p>People have commented on how gambling adverts follow them everywhere, even after they have tried to stop gambling. Many talk about how free bets and bonuses pulled them back in at their most vulnerable moments. Others describe how hard it is to watch sports or use social media without being reminded of gambling.</p><p>Some responses come from family members who recognise the patterns Christopher and Annie describe. Others are from people who say they had never thought about gambling advertising this way before, but now see how it encourages people to keep gambling for longer and spend more than they planned.</p><p>What stands out is how often people say the same thing: this feels familiar, and it feels wrong.</p><p>This sentiment reflects what research and lived experience have been saying for years. Although it’s a process, there are ways to help you manage urges and rewrite your brain. </p><p>One of the hardest but most rewarding things to do when getting over the chase is to forget the money you lost and move on from it. But going cold turkey to start is obviously daunting. The first few days in particular leave many people feeling anxious and irritable. Still, once you’ve reached key milestones (such as one day, one week, and one month) you may feel less of a need to gamble and be able to distance yourself from it.</p><p>A lot of gamblers crave the feeling of being in control or having agency while gambling. But this is an illusion, as you are never in control — the house is. You can feel a sense of real control by applying routine to other areas of your life, particularly in early recovery. Schedule your days, pre-plan your spending and make sure you have barriers in place like <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gamban.com/apps"><u>Gamban</u></a> for bad days. Think back to something you used to enjoy, it could be reading or something creative like a musical instrument. </p><p>It can be hard to force yourself back into a hobby, but try working on this consistently, even for just 20 minutes a day. Count the number of steps, pages or days you have applied yourself to something and this will help you repair the dopamine circuitry in your brain, which gambling has made reliant on short term gratification.</p><h3>Support Systems</h3><p>Leaving gambling behind means you may have to step away from certain activities and social circles, leaving you at a loss for what to do. </p><p>The good news is that there are thousands of other people out there who feel the same.
